The Color Purple
The Color Purple is an inspiring family saga that tells the unforgettable story of a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world. The theater production is set to a joyous score of music featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues. The Color Purple is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love and a celebration of life.
The Color Purple is directed by Gary Griffin, and is adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by Grammy Award winner Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray and choreography by Donald Byrd.

The musical opened on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre on December 2, 2005. Since April of 2007, the role of Celie, the main character, is played by the 2004 American Idol winner, Fantasia Barrino. (New York only.)
The Outer Critics Circle awarded The Color Purple as the ‘Outstanding Broadway Musical’. It also received the Tony Award as ‘Best Musical’. In 2007, Fantasia won the Theatre World Award for her role in The Color Purple.
